Ma Lil depicts the struggles of an African American family during a one hundred year period. The story begins in 1865 with the birth of the main character Lil. Lil overcomes her fear and loss to raise her family in the face of impossible odds. The story is not told in any chronological order. The story is a collection of the memories of three generations of family members.
