I began work on this short story some time ago. I will post some of the material from it on this blog.
One fall morning Angelique returned to Cobb College for an alumni reunion. It was a very warm day in September. Angelique was wearing shorts and a top. In the south, summer and winter were often indistinguishable, and today was one of those days. The leaves were still green and the temperature was in the 90's. As Angelique sat alone on her bench waiting for her friends to arrive, she reflected on the past five years of her life.
The Reunion
On a beautiful fall morning in September, Kathy Robbins to Penneton College for an alumni reunion. Even though it was September, it was 88 degrees and extremely warm. Kathy sat on a bench under a shade tree to try and feel a breeze. The reunion banquet would begin in five hours and she wondered if she would see any of her old flames especially him?
Kathy sat in the dimly lit room straining her eyes to see a familiar face. However, she did not see any classmates. Finally, a young lady walked over and sat at her table. She introduced herself and began the usual small talk. Maybe, she should have saved her money and not come back. They had only been out of school five years and these reunions were expensive. She had hoped to have some fun. Work and sleep and work and sleep and more work was making her feel as if she was forty instead of twenty seven. But, still wasting one's money to sit in a dark room was no fun.
Kathy had a two hour drive from Penneton to Greenbrier. The drive was a scenic drive with deers, trees and lakes. Kathy began to reflect on her relatively care free college life. She had always assumed that when she completed college and then graduate school life would fall into place. However, now she began to realize that this was not the case. She had not anticipated the problems of the "real world". With an MBA, everyone had expected her to work in the executive tier of a large corporation. However she had not received these types of offers and was employed at a small marketing firm. She was barely able to make ends meet. She had tried networking, alumni functions , career consultants, webinars, seminars everything. Actually, she was exhausted and really was contemplating filing for unemployment.
