Structure Your Classroom for Success

These are notes which I have taken while reading CHAMPS by Randy Sprick.  In Section 1 the following topics are covered: pp 26-33
  • shaping behavior
  • motivation
  • classroom goals
  • guidelines for success
  • positive expectations
  • maintaining family contacts
The areas that I need to focus on most are motivation and guidelines for success.  It is pointed out that two factors largely determine how effective a particular motivator will be for a person.  How badly the person desires the reward and if he or she perceives the motivation as being something he/she can successfully accomplish.  In other words, if I provide a student with a reward for acceptable behavior that he or she does not desire, I will not see the changes in the students behavior that I desire.  Also, if the student feels inadequate or as if he/she cannot accomplish the goal that I have established then he or she will not attempt to achieve the reward ( for fear of failure).  The instructor must build success for all students into lessons and activities.  I must establish goals that I know all of the students can achieve.

Also, of interest in this section is the discussion of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation as well as Expectancy times Value theory of motivation ( expectancy X value= motivation).

GUIDELINES FOR SUCCESS
pp 34-40
Guidelines for success are basic attitudes, traits  and behaviors that help students to achieve success in the classroom.   Guidelines for success differ from classroom rules because rules are enforceable standards  for  behavior (i.e. keep your hands and feet to yourself etc)  An example of Guidelines for success are - always try, cooperate with others, be responsible and be safe.

CHAMPS

I am reading the book CHAMPS written  by Randy Spricks, Ph.d. this summer.  I was not able to attend the district CHAMPS training this summer because the seats were filled before I had an opportunity to register.  I am therefore reading in order to understand this approach to classroom management prior to attending a training session in the future.  CHAMPS is  an evidence-based  approach to classroom management.  It is not a curriculum or a program.   The book is titled CHAMPS because CHAMPS is an acronym and reflects behavioral expectations:

C    Conversation
H    Help
A    Activity
M    Movement
P     Participation
S     Success

In my next blog posting I will discuss, Section 1 - Structure Your Classroom for Success.
On the education tab for this blog, I will post strategies and activities  which can be used with CHAMPS .
